"Rumplebottom Rumplebottom, bottom of my rump, and if you disrespect, you eat my pump"

Yep, that made it worth it. I probably couldn't have recorded that line on the first go without a few giggling outtakes. And then following it up with the sock line, what a spicy garnish. This "animated radioshow" style is generally not my cup of tea, but stuff like that is your strongest ammunition to keep people hooked.

EDIT: I just saw tags and had another laugh.

Bottom of my rump!

Beneath the low bit-rate, there seems to be some decent animation and sense of ease in/out here, and a cool story to boot. It almost feels like it's human nature to make Icon Story / AvA type digs. This is a fun start!

I also noticed that the output format is about as low on YT as it is here. I'd take a bit of time to check out some tutorials to get a grasp on video render settings and compression, specifically for variable/fixed bitrate and for matching your native animation's framerate.

You might also benefit from squashing your workflow down to just one program to reduce multi-compression, but I can't fairly make a full judgement on how much you're using Vegas for this workflow. Maybe for camerawork and audio? If so, Animate does have dedicated tools for doing so nowadays, and it would help give you cleaner panning curves than what you'll get from Vegas' pre-built curves.

Either way, if the quality is cleaned up even just a bit it'd be easier to appreciate the dope movement I'm seeing. Keep it up!

YastuYasusu responds:

thanks!

Some classic, decent sprite animation, goated GenesisKeys tune also ofc.

My money, I'd go with demo 3. Kyo and Jin (that specific Jin spritesheet in particular) seem like they'd have the most interesting choreography, pretty dynamic and technical fighters the two of em. If you're worried about the gap in projectile ability you could always look at some of the stuff that Jin can pull of in SFxT.

Even though I get the concept for Kula and Sub-Zero, their combat style would have pretty stark opposition. Sub-Zero would probably rather fight Glacius from KI, and Kula would probably rather fight somebody like Rimururu from SamSho. Either of them could probably be comfortable fighting Kolin from SFV since she's got a more militaristic, and therefore neutral fighting adaptation with her ice powers. That being said, to my knowledge nobody has made a full back-port sheet for Kolin, which is a bit of a shame.

As for Scorp v Shinnok, it's just a bit less exciting since it's same universe i.e. you could make the match happen in the many games they really share.

GrandmasterWhiteL responds:

thank you for your feedback i really appreciate it!!
I do wanna work more on the Kyo vs Jin mostly because it's my most recent at out of all three of them.

for Sub-Zero vs kula that was mainly more of me needing ideas at the time so I kinda sorts "copied" what i saw other animators were doing

as for scrop vs Shinnok the fight was originally planned to be part of a Mortal kombat sprite series that i canceled cuz it was too much work, and I felt that I didn't have the skill set to work on something like

An indisputable classic. The only memory I went in with was Kongregate spoiling the final level's solution with its achievement badge, but other than that, I went in with a blank slate and it's just a total blast. Level 82 easily took the most of my time, but given the general favor towards wingding-core, I probably should have been able to get it a bit snappier. This is a flash puzzler I would recommend everybody try at least once.

A sweet jam w/ decent combat and awesome art. I appreciate that the sock ghost's sprite flashes when you're at full charge for the Ha-boo!-ken (sorry) and I was pleasantly surprised to see that you could jump-cancel the slide, which made my second play even more fun than the first one. I also appreciate the checkpoint before the moving plats + bird setup; I have a hunch this was put in to alleviate the difficulty post-layout, but I think keeping the challenge in the same room overall helps distinguish the section via its length.

Only thing I didn't like was the catch-up cam. I think for the full game, it'd be cool to either have holding up/down to look, or to have the camera's Y acceleration tweaked. Also worth mention: You can spam the titlescreen's start input to make the thunderbolts and lightning very very frightening (i.e. loud. Also, sorry again.)

Also, weird thing, I thought this game wasn't working right with my PS5 controller because I wasn't getting movement from it, turns out it's a Firefox issue! Very strange.

Overall, awesome jam! Keep it up.

Butzbo responds:

Thanks for the review!

I must mention that your hunch is quite right, at first levels were going to be short/smaller, but in the process of making the 3rd one more distinct, it ended up larger overall. and good point on the camera details, some small technicalities which can improve quite a bit and aren't actually that hard to solve.

Also, good find on the thunderbolts and lightning, haha!

Nice idea for a simple game. However, the music isn't showing up for me, and I did try playing with the Upper-Left Speaker.

The drums are a bit less acoustic than I would hope, but the guitar DOES sound really good. ^^

Wonderful! I imagine riding on a black horse through a flower and wheat field, looking up only to see a wyvern on the peak of a fiery volcano, red eyes fixated on me.

DanJohansen responds:

That is a mighty awesome vision as well! :D Add 4 wings to the horse and a couple of well placed horns and it's really something XD

I really do like this, the middle with the flanging wave is too funky to pass up. I think this could use a backup lead though, like a string synth in the background.
